Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin layers bonded to your natural teeth to improve the appearance of chipped, stained, or discolored teeth. At Gentling Smiles, Dr. Gentling uses porcelain to craft your custom-made veneers that can match the look and function of healthy, strong natural teeth.

What will my veneers look and feel like?

You have input as far as what your veneers will look like. Dr. Gentling consults you on the design aspects, including the color, shape, and shade of your teeth.

Dr. Gentling uses models, photographs, and X-rays to capture images of your teeth that a dental lab uses to produce veneers that will look great and feel comfortable when bonded to your natural teeth.

How do veneers work?

It takes careful planning to create the perfect set of veneers just for you. Typically, you need to come in for two visits to get fitted with veneers. At the first visit, Dr. Gentling prepares your teeth to allow space for the ultra-thin porcelain to be fitted over them.

Finally, Dr. Gentling fits you with temporary acrylic restorations that mimic the veneers. You wear them for about three weeks. These “temporary veneers” give you a preview of what your new smile will look like.

A master lab technician uses the models, photographs, and X-rays your dentist captures to custom-make your veneers.

At your second appointment, Dr. Gentling will test out each veneer and assess them for appearance and fit. This also provides you with an opportunity to preview the new look.

The last step is bonding the thin veneers to the outer surface of your teeth, creating a strong bond between tooth and porcelain. After minor adjustments to your bite and a final polish, you are left with a brand new smile.

How long do veneers last?

With proper care, your veneers should last you a while. Since veneers are bonded onto your teeth, you can’t take them out on your own and clean them. That means maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly, as well as following a healthy diet, is the best defense you can provide your veneers. Keep up with your regular visits to Gentling Smiles so Dr. Gentling can monitor your oral health.
