Ever had a cavity? If you haven’t, you probably know someone who has. Cavities are very common and most adult Americans have had at least one. Regular visits to the dentist’s office for cleanings and exams can help prevent these cavities from forming and destroying your smile.
At Gentling Smiles, we are proud to offer thorough dental exams and cleanings for your health. Scheduling routine professional appointments with your dentist at least every six months can significantly reduce your chances of developing tooth decay as well as gum disease and infection. For your benefit, we offer sedation dentistry should you desire some extra comfort during your visit.
Brushing and flossing daily at home is one half of the equation for proper dental care. However, most people miss spots, creating the perfect environment for tooth decay. It is important to visit your dental office for routine cleanings so these spots do not develop into cavities or other complications.
Once your teeth have been thoroughly cleaned, Dr. Gentling will examine your entire mouth as well as the digital x-rays we take. Any signs of decay, infection, or disease can be identified and we will develop a treatment plan with you. If these signs are detected early, less treatment will be required.
One issue we look for is periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease. If bacteria infect the gums, the gums pull away from the teeth and disease eventually attacks the bone. Gentling Smiles offers periodontal disease treatment so your smile can be healthy.
Oral cancer screening is also an important part of a regular dental exam. Catching this life-threatening disease early is vital to being able to treat it.
Cavities & Root Canals
In the case that a cavity does develop, we offer tooth-colored fillings so your smile will look natural. When a larger filling is necessary, we sometimes use a natural-looking crown to strengthen the tooth.
If left untreated, tooth decay can develop into a root canal infection. The decay will eat through the tooth until it reaches the innermost part of the tooth, the root canal, where sensitive tissue called pulp is. During root canal treatment, the infected pulp is removed so the natural tooth can remain in its place. A crown may also be used to strengthen the tooth after a root canal.
Though we try to preserve your natural tooth, an extensively infected tooth may have to be extracted for the benefit of your overall health. However, we also offer dental implants at our office to replace an extracted tooth so there are no gaps in your smile.
Our aim is for you to have strong, healthy, and beautiful teeth so you can be confident in your smile.
